Time continues without a break, but we need milestones to help us plan and make sense of our lives. A new year gives us that welcome feeling of a fresh start.
We love the feeling of a fresh start that a new year brings. Yet the truth is that tomorrow will still look a lot like today. The weather, the struggles, the responsibilities, the circumstances, none of them magically transform just because the calendar turned. If we want the new year to be better, the change has to begin inside us.
An old notebook is no longer useful to write in, but I can still read it. The past is like that: I cannot live there, but I can learn from it. I thank God for what the past year taught me and look forward to the next one, asking Him for wisdom to make decisions that line up with His heart.
God does not need to wait for a new year to bless us, or for the latest slogan declaring it the year of something. His grace and His mercies are new every morning. He is the same yesterday, today, tomorrow, and at any point in our future.
