A mountain can look severe and beautiful at the same time, with snow on its peaks and changing weather above the meadow. It is an image that helps me think about finding beauty in the difficult seasons of life.
Life, much like the changing seasons, brings us days of comfort and ease right alongside days of challenge and growth. Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” That verse is not only about physical beauty. It speaks to the value and the purpose God can place in every season of our lives.
It is easier to welcome sunshine than rain, yet difficult seasons can teach us things we would never have chosen to learn for ourselves.
James 1:2-3 (NIV) gives us a powerful perspective: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” These words never pretend that trials are pleasant. They teach us that trials can become useful when they strengthen our faith, shape our character, and produce perseverance.
Just as rain nourishes the earth and coaxes new life out of it, our difficulties can lead to spiritual renewal and personal growth. Ease and hardship both play a part in shaping who we are becoming.
Philippians 4:8 (NIV) urges us to fix our minds on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. I want to learn to pay attention to those things even when life hurts, trusting that God can work in a season I would not have chosen.
